I need to replace the lower unit on my Merc 200 20 HP motor. The skeg is broken and it needs resealed. $500 worth of work for a 31 year old motor. I looked all over for a used LU for this motor, but keep finding only 40 HP and up?
Is it really not worth any money to anyone to fix small LU's?

Might want to shop around for that skeg repair. Should be nowhere near that much, unless there is more to it than meets the eye. Can you post a picture of the damage?? In my opinion, if the motor runs good, it's worth fixing or replacing the lower unit, if within reason..

Hi, DOC.

I agree that the $500 quote is exhorbitant and that you can find a sick engine on eBay for a lot less. You can probably find a good engine on eBay for less.

If all else fails, try www.twincityoutboard.com.

They probably have a good used one.

Good luck. :)

I have looked everywhere for a skeg repair. Once again, they all start at around 40 HP motors.

The total repair included a re-seal, skeg repair and a propeller replacement (which I need no matter what) $425 plus tax and such. This was at the only Mercury dealer in this area.

No luck on e-bay either.
