why put it in gear

why when taking off the upper unit of a stern drive should you put it in gear????
the reason im asking is because i took mine off and am ready to put it on again but i didnt put it in gear am i gonna have trouble when reinstalling????

It depends on the make and model.

On the older Merc #1 and many other Alphas it needs to be in gear so it will slide together.

Some have "shift' parts that do not align in any other gear while going together.

It doesn't seem to really matter on a Bravo.

Just make sure it's in the proper gear before you put it back together.

You do have an OEM manual don't you?

i do have the manual but it didnt say to put it in gear i will double check,,, its a volvo aq130a with a 250 leg
