Why short transoms?

I was wondering why one would look at a short (16") transom instead of a long (20") one when purchasing an aluminum utility boat, other than if you already had a short shaft engine? Most boat makers offer both sizes, but I saw one mfg. (Naden aluminum out of Canada) that looks to only offer short transoms on their 14 foot models....is there a reason for this? Are longer shaft outboards a more recent phenomenon? Thanks.

well, for one thing, short shafts carry thier weight lower down, important on small boats.

I imagine there are other reasons too..

rgds

Frank

Smaller lighter boats that do not need high transoms because they are used in protected waters or for small outboards in the 2-25 HP class; portability in taking the motor off the transom. 15" motor legs are available up to 60 HP engines and for very large motors (150 HP and up) for racing purposes.
