Well another disappointing day :( , I replaced the shift cable bellows and that went good took about an 45min not too bad I thought being first time doing it. we got to the lake and i put the plug and all the usual stuff, backed her in the water and pulled the engine cover off just to make sure it was Ok, still getting water in it gradually, so I pull forward and pull the plug and drain the water, I checked the Bellows again (exhaust & U-joint) and they are in excellent condition still connected on all four sides, so I wanted to do a little test, put the plug back in and told wife where i wanted to stop in the water(water just below the exhaust bellow) and sure enough water coming in gradually Slowly, so I lower the unit for the impeller to be able to draw in water and fired her up, water coming in slow and a little exhaust fumes coming from behind the engine(down low), the only thing that was submerged under water was the lower part of the gimble housing where the two holes are, and the lower unit. Any ideas, is there a flap of sumsort that allows exhaust out but no water in down there???? Sorry for the long thread just wanted you to know exactly what I did and how, Exhaust bellows was above water.

Good job on the explanation but still have no clue as to your motor or outdrive?

Gcboat, his boat, motor and drive are in his sig at the bottom of his post.

The bottom 2 bolts on the transom shield have anodes on the end of them. Kind of look like big acorns. Sometimes the bolts will literally dissolve. Try to turn the bolts from outside the transom, they shouldn't move. If they do, your transom shield is probably leaking. Check the transom and make sure it's not soft also.

About the only other thing it could be is your y-pipe corroded and leaking.

Either one, transom shield or y-pipe, requires the engine to be removed to repair it.

It wouldn't be common to get alittle exhaust fume from inside the engine compartment would it and water will come into the boat from the Y-pipe? one more question, When pulled the boat out of the water, water was pouring out of the two holes out of the bottem of the gimble housing above the anodes is that normal??

are you missing a couple of mounting bolts or nuts?
and I think you have a hole some were between the manifolds and the transom. or is one of the rubbers loose, clamp slipped?

I will check the bolts & nuts holding the gimble housing and make sure they are snugged up accourding to specs
The anodes were covered up with what looks like old marine caulk so will check them also.
On the highway there is a spot before you cross the bridge at 65mph its like jumping a ramp, boat didn't leak before that until that day, put it in the water and engine compartment filled with water, thought it was my shift cable bellows, fixed today and still water coming in:confused:
I left the exaust bellow above water line to help with troubleshooting and still water coming in, I will check everything you guys said to check, any other suggestions are still welcome too! So gimble housing could have come loose also, Humm.

I'd take that as a hint. ;)
Hope it's something simple like new anodes and not transom rot.

Yea it is normal for water to be coming out of the idle relief holes on each side of the transom shield. It almost sounds like your y pipe is rusted out and or leaking, yes the exhaust is water cooled so exhaust pipe rusted and leaking also bring water with it.

Good luck with it, and with all those parts your up to about a month or 2's boat payment.

Ok, Now that I have found this thread I will try to help out also like I had said in your other thread.:D:)In the past I have found the Y pipe on the inside of the boat looes by trying to wiggel it around, It should not move, You might need to try to unhook the hose clamps on the bottom rubber exhaust hose that is on the Y pipe and slide the hose a little so you can try to wiggel the Y pipe a round to see if it is loose. Also see #5 seal in this link.http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...4.png&inbr=2203&bnbr=250&bdesc=MERCATHODE+KIT If you have a box on the bottom side of the transom assy, With too bolts that go up and hold this on then that seal could be leaking also. Also see Numbers # 18 31 41 42 and 12 is the Y pipe seal, In this link. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...MBAL+HOUSING+SQUARE/SQUARE+UPPER+SWIVEL+SHAFT And did you use # 22 when you did the new shift bellows?

Why don't you just put the boat in the water, get in there with a flashlight and a mirror and find out where it's coming from.
On some boats, I have had to pull the engine, put the drive back on, plug the exhaust Y and back the boat down into the water. Then you have the engine out of the way and can see exactly where the water is coming in at, and it may not be an transom shield problem. Bayliner has livewell pumps and other things going through the hull, and some of them are just cheap plastic. They are also in places you can't see with the engine in.
