Why switched and unswitched power source?

Just got the Fusion ipod head unit, doing a little prep before the install, why would you want a switched and unswitched power source. The presets and clock will be maintained via Eprom. Seems unswitched would just set you up to run your battery down if you forget to turn off your stereo. In fact the previous owner had a switch installed in line with the battery to turn cut all power for that reason. TIA

i turn off all power except to the bilge pumps. nothing other than engine related items should ever be run thru the ignition switch.

Help me out on this, virtually everything is on a switched line lights, blower, existing radio, etc.... you can't turn them on unless ignition is on, Bilge has a separate Battery. Except for the bilge,same way a car is wired. TIA
