Was looking through a fishing forum I'm a member of and I see someone who fishes off shore in a approx a 32-35ft which had 4x 300hp Verados!!!

Now twins I can understand but if you're not racing then why go fishing with triples or quads??? Fuel consumption aside how much more hp do you gain when dragging 4 motors and gearboxes through the water??

Surely this guy isn't getting the benefit of the full 1200hp....

Is it a replacement for small man thingy syndrome??? i just don't understand why you'd have such a set up .??

yea, 3 engines may be 'needed' on some larger boats, but 4 engines is a bit over the top.

I'm sure the folks with these boats are not really concerned about the economics of it.

might just be obsessed with outboards, maybe he thinks it looks cool, heck i see no reason for going over 30mph anyway, if you're in that big a hurry you don't have time to fish, or could be needed to get on a plane with a heavy load of fish

Re: Why triple or quad motors on a boat

Old story but back in 1969 a man named Pete Dorsey (Dorsey Trailers) went to Miami where a boat builder built Cary boats. These were offshore racing hulls. Dorsey wanted a boat that he could run 100 miles offshore, billfish and return before dark. They built him a 28 foot boat that could run over 60 mph in a 4-5 foot sea. He ran that boat for several years and caught record fish. So boats like that are built for a special reason and they fill a need.

If you have too much money and don't know what to do with it-----

Toys: He who dies with the most wins.

And no, it is not compensation for a small "thing." More than likely, he has a big one. --or at least average.

But as stated above: Specialty built boats may need the power.

There are 2 boats on you tube one with 6 Yamaha V6s and one with 8 Yamaha V6s. Video of the 6 engine at speed.
Not sure about the 8 motors. There seems to be a video of it in shallow water.

Just in case one breaks you have back-ups. LOL Its overkill, but popular among offshore riggs because it gets them out there faster. And yes, people who spend that much on motors are not worried about the fuel costs. These guys will tweak these set-ups spending thousands of bucks just to gain a couple more mph.

And most of them are center console, they need to have speed to get out of the weather.

My neighbor has a 35' Scarab Supersport center console. It came with either twin big block / Alpha drives, or three V6 Outboards. My neighbors boat had the twin 7.4L Alpha drives and would run 50+ MPH. It was also very good in rough water. Once we came home 24 miles in 5' seas. We were the only boat that could stay on plane and make good time. Every cruiser was plowing water at idle speed.

With triples I've heard the third engine only adds 10-20% of fuel consumption. Again I dont own one so cant definitively comment.

That's what came to my mind when I saw the thread title...

Why have quads (or even trips)? If you have to ask, if you don't see a "need" for going more than 30mph, then you'll probably never understand why. It's the same as the people that wonder why any of us would have a hole in the water you pour money into, or why snail boaters wonder why gas passers spend so much on fuel when wind is free. Different strokes for different folks. If you're out on the water and having fun, who cares what the other guy thinks?

I don't see a thing wrong with having 4 Verados bolted to the stern. :D

When you are fishing 60-100 miles away from the closest weigh-in station and you are competing for six and seven figure prize money, time is of the essence. Knocking a couple of minutes off the run in or out to the fishing grounds is that much more of an advantage over next guy.

When you’re paying $15-25K entry fees, the cost of fuel is a drop in the bucket when looking at the big picture

Saw a 'Regulator' today. Guessin it was 30 foot or so. Rigged with 4 300 hp Suzukis. If'n it were me I'd just go with a pair of 600's ....

Who makes a 600hp outboard? Seven Marine's are 557hp, but at $60k each it would be a lot cheaper to go with quad Suzukis.
