So my last post asked about rewinding the starter spring on my 1968 3hp johnson. I have don that successfully thanks to your wonderful help. Now I can't the motor started for the life of me. I'm doing everything according to the manual - and I get nothing. Both carburator knobs are pointing down, the throttle is at the start position, the choke is out, the gas (and oil mixture) is primed. It's also in a bucket of water. Every once in a while it will start and run for about 5 seconds. Then it shuts off. What am I doing wrong!!!???

The carb knobs have you set them correctly? the top or low speed gently bottomed then out 1 & 1/2 turns out then the hispeed which I am not sure but my guess is gently bottomed out then opened 3/4 turn.Do you have spark? Have you put a 1/2 teaspoon mixed fuel in the spark plug hole to test it fireing?
When it starts and runs 5 seconds it leads me to think the carb is plugged or the needles are not adjusted corectly.

Try squirting some oil/fuel mixture into the carb. If you can make it run by squirting oil/fuel mixture in the carb, you most likely have a stuck needle on the float and not letting fuel into the carb.
Also make sure that the compression and spark are ok.

Spark , fuel , compression, timing. If it's got compression, timing and spark then its left to fuel.
