Why would a pull start require a battery? 1992 Evinrdue 8hp?

Why does a pull start outboard require a battery? There is no electric start and I was able to run it after starting it without the battery connected.

It might work as a charger for an onboard battery for lights, fish finder etc

Some of the 8hp models, particularly the sailboat models, came with a low amperage (3 or 4 amp) charging system. Just enough to maintain a charged battery with light use, but not enough to charge a dead battery.
