A PO did just that with my boat. Here are the results. Every piece of wood MUST be replaced except possibly the main stringers.

The glass coming off the stringer is not a good sign. Nice job by the PO on doing it the easy way.

Pictures are worth a thousand words. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the flotation foam is saturated with water too.

i have owned several used boats and come across stupid "easy way out fixes" all the time, thus 'IF YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO FIX IT THE RIGHT WAY, DONT!"

this one i think takes the cake tho!

yeah,,,,,, i see it all the time......lay down another cut piece of plywood.....and throw a rug on it.

it looks good and feels strong.......but it condems the boat in 2 seasons.

traps all moisture under the deck.....and also lets more heat develop....the fungus just thrives

Re: Why you shouldn't just lay new plywood over rotten deck

I had a restore on a ProCraft a few years back, where the previous owner had put a new piece of 1/4" plywood over the entire deck (actually did a nice job of cutting to fit) and then glassed the whole thing in, tabbed and all. What alot of work for a totally worthless patch. The old deck (under the new ply) was so bad you could still feel the flex in the new deck.

When I bought the boat, the ad said "NEW FLOOR", so this told me it was full restore before leaving the house...LOL I was right, but the price was right and the "real" restore turned out quite nice.

Foam doesn't dry out....unfortunately it has to be removed and replaced.

when I say a little I am talking 1/16 of an inch speratically where the wet wood was sitting on it. fortunatly the PO tabbed the new in well and no other moisture was allowed in

Aye .. but water comes in 3 forms .. liquid/gas/solid ..

Its also going to migrate down left untouched. .. meaning your "dry" foam on your deck dont mean a hill of beans when you have wet foam.

If you have wet foam .. You should "get it out of there" basically is what the forum is suggesting.

I have many of times had to go into a Compartment filled with foam and its all dry on my cut-out .. then I have to get to the repair and find 4" of wet Foam.

IF You have water .. thats ICE/HUMIDITY and FLUID. .. And Water INside a boats construction is a NO NO .. period.

Im just saying.

YD.

PS. Go dig for wet foam .. ?

Yah, see it all the time around here. Kinda goes like this...

"Couldn't I just lay down some new ply over this nasty mulch? I just want to run it for a couple more years then sell it to get something nice."

Well the foam issue is a mute point now. Pulled out some that I had planned on pulling anyway and this is what I found

You found a colon? :eek::eek:

That is gross.

Yah, pulling up the rest would be a good move just in case something else is hiding under there;)

That is how it goes. Even foam you think is dry, is saturated down near the bottom.

Re: Why you shouldn't just lay new plywood over rotten deck

Yah, the problem is that the PO to me was my step-dad. I know that he did not do any of that. After talking to him I found that he bought it from a boat store down in Fl. I won't name names and they said that they had just "reupholstered" it. I belive they were the ones to do all that as does he. SO BUYER BE WARE EVEN WHEN BUYING FROM A BOAT DEALERSHIP
