Why your motor may not start or run poorly with a carb motor

We all know how bad the gas is today...Friend has a 15horse 2004 4 stroke carb model...his big 150 Black Max let him down due to an original fuel pump so he had to use the little guy to get back in.. He limped in on one cylinder...I was positive he hurt the motor but that was not going to be the case.. I did a compression test and both cylinders were fine...next did a spark test and both cylinders had good spark..So it had to be fuel...Went to Paradise Marine in Stockton and good old Garland who always comes through did so again. He said he is seeing a lot of carb motors with plastic non-adjustable floats coming in with the same problem..Short story is that Ethanol is warping the float and I will need to replace it and the accelerator pump..Did it today and sure enough the float where the needle sits was warped and was the problem...Motor started and ran perfect after the quick rebuild..nothing to this carb...while I was at it I rebuild his 150 Black Max fuel pump so he now has both motors running to catch the tail end of our Salmon run up the Sacramento river...just wanted to pass this on for those that have a running issue...check the basics..i.e. spark, compression.....you know it's fuel after that...

We all thank you for your feedback on this. I am very famillar with the 15hp 05 carb and I doubt that the float could cause this. We llive in New York and don't have the improved fuel that California demands so I may not be comparing apples to apples. It would have to warp a bunch to lower the fuel level that much. Even if it did a partial choke setting would overide it and get you home for sure. The biggest problem these carbs have is fuel passages being plugged by old gas residue so always drain the fuel from your spare engine when not in use!!!
