1986 175 HP v6

OK, who can explain this? I'm having a stalling problem. Not a very serious problem but a real irritating one.

I'll give you a typical example. Start the engine -no problem. Run the one mile to the fuel dock -no problem. Turn the engine off, fill up and restart - no problem. Leave at wake only speed (about 1200 rpm). Go a couple of hundred feet and it looses power and stalls. Hard starting but will restart. The same thing happens even if I've been running a long time before shutting the engine down. If I don't turn off the engine I can go all day at trolling speed (1000 -1200 RPM). Replaced the fuel pump diaphram and gaskets, but not check valves because the shop said that they almost never go bad, in fact they don't even stock the check valves. No change.

Re: Wierd stalling

DasBoot,

Don't know age. Why switchboxes? If they are bad wouldn't you expect more problems than just this one? I'm beginning to think that it is a fuel supply problem but I need to get out with a second person (my son) so that I can see if pumping the bulb or spraying gas directly into the carbs makes a difference. I know it's not a clogged fuel line or water sepatator because it also happens when I use a portable tank with a separate fuel line and bulb.

I'll do a little more investigating and let everyone know it turns out.

Just guessing but it may be that the carbs are vapour locking. Next time you go through the failure sequence try priming the fuel bulb before you start the engine. See then if it gets you more than a couple of hundred yards. If it does cure the problem then you know that it is fuel related.

When it dies on it's own pull a few plugs (NOT the drain plug!) If they are wet it's spark related, if they are dry it's fuel related.
