Started a new post because no one has commented on my stringer design from my rebuild post. Here's the info 1969 Glasspar citation 16.5 ft, outboard, got the deck ripped out now getting ready for the new stuff. The link below shows my stringer situation, pretty sure this was the original deck. Here's what I think, the fiber glass roven is the stringer, the foam and 2x10x12 are support structure for the stringer. The stuff that came out had 3 sectiions of roven 12 inches wide over the wood to the fiberglass (stringers) to the hull. Has anyone ever seen this and what are your opinions on it, Im getting ready to recreate it with my rebuild. Thanks all.http://s772.photobucket.com/albums/yy4/brewedin78/stringers/

Re: wierd stringers

Not sure exactly what your question is about this. It's an unusual (read as: non traditional) design. It looks like the combination of glass and foam was meant to provide the stiffness that wood stringers normally provide.

If you replace the original structure the same way you should be fine. I can't tell from the pictures how the boat was originally made, but it sort of looks like some glass was laid in the hull, foam was put on top of that, the foam was either molded or carved to shape, and then more glass was put on to finish the structure.

I'm guessing the old foam was wet, that's why you removed it? Was there any wood structure at all?

Re: wierd stringers

I don't know if this will be helpful - but I suggest you visit the Glasspar site, and Fiberglassics- (google them) -there are a lot of guys there that know lots about old boats. I have a 1967 Glasspar Avalon. My understanding is that somewhere around 1965 or 1966, Glasspar was taken over by Larson. One of the changes that Larson made in the manufacture of the boats (they kept the same Glasspar hull molds for awhile) was to stop using wood in the stringers - I am just reciting this from memory based on previous internet sleuthing I did when I acquired my boat, so don't take it as gospel without doing the research yourself - but I believe Larson was trying to avoid the rotten stringer problem so common with early glass boats. Anyway, I think you will find lots of good info on those sites - best of luck.

Re: wierd stringers

My Aquasport and every other Aquasport has foamed filled stringers. I guess we can add Glaspar to that list as well. Do you still have the tops of the stringers? If so you can glass them back down with epoxy and 1708,then fill with foam. IMHO If you replace them with wood you are going to add a lot of weight for not much strength. If you do not have the tops you can build molds and remake the original design, then glass those back in. Check out classicaquasport.com when you get a chance as there is a guy rebuilding a 72 flatback with some great pics of the cut stringers.

Re: wierd stringers

no real questions here, just wanted to see if anyone had seen this before so that I didn't make a mistake re-creating it. So far what I've heard comforts my soul on this project. Thanks for the feedback guys.
