Wierdest 40hp Etec Problem

Hello all,

I am having the Wierdest Etec issue. First off I have a 2008 40hp Evinrude Etec with Tiller. Ive taken it out about 5-6 times so far and the other day I had a problem where when I shut down the motor via the red stop switch (not the key) there was a wierd continuous humming noise after the motor was off and if I tried to restart the motor it would not start. The starter would kick in but the motor wouldnt start. So, I then turned the key itself off and back on again and this somehow reset the motor and the humm went away and the motor started up perfectly like usual. This problem has happened only twice so far out of many other shut downs with the red stop switch on the tiller handle that worked fine.

Any ideas what could be causing this? The fact that turning off the key and turning it back on again fixes the problem makes me think this is a problem with the onboard computer???

It may be more than likely a defective lanyard switch. The next time it happens remove the engine cover and look at the led lights on the side of the computer. it may indicate a problem that the dealer will have to look at. The owners manual will tell you what the led lights pertain to.

It would be good to contact the dealer anyway as there may be a service bulletin out to address the problem that you are describing.

i would just shut it off with the key the right way from now on?

you have a warranty, that it to the dealer, before you screw around and void the warranty.

Most likely the humming sound is from the electric fuel pump. When you push the red button, the motor stops, but when you release it, the key is still ON and that provides 12v to the motor systems.
