I have now been a boat owner for almost 3 weeks. And being a used boat it needs a little work, and I am really concerned about keeping it in great shape. On the first night I left the boat in the front yard near an oak tree. The next morning I was out there picking up the leaves. My wife, being awesome, offered to move her car out of the carport to make space for the boat. I was speechless. And tonight, with a monsoon type rainstorm, I was using the kitchen counter to put the carbs back together. I did put some news paper down to protect the carbs.

Anyway, she has been supportive the entire time. That sure does make buying and owning a boat easier!

Enjoy it while you can. I bought my first boat 25 years ago after my wife told me if I stopped smoking I could buy a boat. At first she was very happy and accommodating with my boating shenanigans.

Fast forward 25 years and 4 boats later and it?s now the "Stupid Boat" and every once and a while I even get the ?it?s either me or that boat?. Boy, I?m going to miss her :p:p

Re: Wife Understands

i guess i'm lucky to as the boat we have now my wife wanted and had a say in picking it out.
our first boat was a an older model bay liner tri hull that has a 165 mercuiser. i really like that 250. any how thats my boat and the searay is hers.
havent used the bay liner so my son talked me into selling it to him. his agrument was its just setting in the driveway and we could use the money to buy gas. any one with kids can see this coming. he got my boat and i havent seen a cent yet. sorry not sure how i ended up here

any how good luck on you boat and hope your wife enjoys boating as much as mine has.
when she asks you what she can do to help on the boat, tell her, her job is to ride on it and make it look good. you cant go wrong after that.

Re: Wife Understands

Three years ago, when I retired, my wife decided I had such a good time on our neighbors boat that we should buy her sisters boat that was for sale. We did and though it's all new to us we love it! She even helps me put the outdrive back on after doing my "why?" preventative maintenance. It would be no fun without her.

my sister wants to name their boat --- "the other woman." do let it be known, but, she loves it also. after each trip, he cleans the outside, she does the inside, before it is covered.

At my wife's suggestion we bought our current and first ever boat. I wanted a Harley for many years, and she suggested we buy a boat instead which we would both enjoy and would be easier on my bad back. She was right on both counts! The occasions when I go out alone or even with other friends I miss her, she really is my First Mate.

i envy you all. My wife hates the thing and has yet to ever go with me. I wonder if that's because it's an eyesore, and only has 1 seat? Hmmm.....

My wife gets seasick watching waterbed commercials on TV. Nevertheless, she has enthustically supported my boating addiction during the past 28 years. I obviously married above myself. Whenever I manage to talk her into taking a ride with me, I make sure it's on a calm day so we can both have a great cruise. :)

Re: Wife Understands

My wife and I had a 2 minute discussion on the way back from the lake we live near.

We were on the beach beforehand, it is a beautiful town beach for residents only, with a real nice resident only boat ramp as well. The girls wanted to go fishing, so we walked over to the docks, fished for a little while. Short time later, a runabout pulls up to the dock to disembark its people. Family of 5, same as ours....3 kids similar in age.

Got in the car, didnt think much of it, until the kids said, it would be fun to have a boat. The drive for us to the ramp is 1.5 miles. Well, my wife and I said, what do you think to each other, and the next day we were requesting info from everywhere. A month later we bought our boat.

My wife loves it, and looks forward to each and every day we can get away on it...raft ups, waterskiing for her and the kids, tubing, my wakebarding...was just something we really thought was a great idea and never looked back. She did grow up on boats, so she loves all riding...calm, in the rough waters, going out in rain, and she skiis and tubes and is fun to be with. She also, proudly, just got her boating license and drives as well.

My wife helps clean it, hangs out while I do any maint on it, loves to pac up lunch and beer for the day, and of course what make sit easy is we have friends with boats on the same lake, so we raft up on a saturday (last week it was 5 boats) and its like a great party all day.

ahhhh....second marriage. Picked the right one this time:D

Re: Wife Understands

I've been married for 12 years and we have a son that will be 10 in August. I am a little young for a mid life crisis, but I was shopping for a bike. My wife was very vocal about not approving. When I told her I was undecided about getting a bike or a boat, she jumped on the boat. By the end of the following day she had every local classified looking for a small boat. In fact, she took over the search until I told her that it was my mid life crisis. I found the boat 2 weeks later on craigslist. A little work and a lot of knowledge and it's ready to go in the boat. I think I will even take my wife.

Re: Wife Understands

I am glad I developed my fishing/boating/hunting and whatever else hobbies/passions at a rather young age. That way, I can plan marriage around hobbies, rather than plan hobbies around marriage (which seems to be a constantly losing battle:D:D)

Re: Wife Understands

I am also really fortunate to have a very supportive wife. She knows how much I love being on the boat, so she does everything she can to ensure the family has a good experience. My wife enjoys being on the water with the family, but deep down I think she would prefer a little more variety over the every weekend lake experience. She never complains, and seems to have a great time. Sometimes I feel guilty because I don't put forth the same effort when it comes to the things she enjoys doing. Although I can boat year round in AZ, I do put the boat away in the winter months so that I can do things for my wife that were neglected during the boating season.

My wife and i have a give and take relation ship. I help her in her gardens and then i get to take her out in my boat. I do have her trained to cover the boat if it rains;).

Re: Wife Understands

My wife is supportive of my boating addiction, likes to go out on the boat and is helpful at the ramp. However, she hates having anything to do with towing. She doesn't even want to be in the tow vehicle when we're towing the boat. Ya accidentally lock the coupler on top of the ball and forget to hook up the chains and the boat passes the car just 1 time.....Geez, some people.....:)
