Wil a 1968 pre-alpha outdrive work with a 90's 2.5 liter?l

I have a 1968 Starcraft Holiday. I was told that the outdrive is a pre-alpha. A friend of mine has a newly rebuilt 1990's 2.5 liter GM Mercruiser that he said he would give to me. Will this newer motor work with my outdrive?
