Have you ever encountered a traffic hazard created by some wandering wildlife ? These caribou were taking a stroll on the highway near the town of Howley Newfoundland today and were not in any hurry to get off the road .....,lets see some pics of your encounters !

Re: Wildlife traffic Hazards

In my neck of the woods, the deer are as plentiful as squirrels. I've hit 2 in three years. Last night I was driving about 45mph and traveled into a dip in the road. There was a deer in the opposite lane. I stomped on the breaks. I passed it and it was less than 3 feet from my mirror. I was very glad it didn't move. I have enough meat in the freezer right now.

A little more on subject, we used to hunt in the Pigeon River Forrest in Northern MI. Almost every morning we would be stopped by the Elk herd crossing the road. We could get out and stand there, the elk were about 15' away. They would slowly pass by, sometimes it would take 10 minutes for the herd to clear. Then we would go off to hunt whitetails.

In Alaska, we would lose at least one person a year to a moose vs. car accident.
Here in Texas you have to watch for cattle on the road sometimes.
Fort Hood has several active herds and I've seen some very nasty car vs. cattle accidents.

Ran a call once for a motorcycle vs 2000lb bull

Brand new Harley, very rural highway after dark, never saw that solid black bull. Killed the rider and the bull.

And a quarter horse will do a number on a jacked up Chevy 4x4, too.

Got a dent in the side of my truck recently from a deer head, saw one cross in front of me, hit brakes, saw no more, on gas and here they come, should have stayed on the gas. It hit the truck, went under the left rear wheel, got up and ran off, I feel sure it died.

Had one tht came out of a ditch Memorial day weekend hit hard, it flew in ditch dead. Found out that if you kill them the state pays deductable on insurance, if wanders away you pay.

We have so many car/deer acidents here in SE Michigan, they put temp. signs up at key crossing locations. More people die swerving around animals than do hitting them. While I have been lucky I am sure it will happen, just dont get caught swerving, really tough to do.

Got in a standoff with a bull guarding some cows. Cost me a new grill and radiatior in my K5 Blazer. Wife bagged a buck two months ago in our Avalanche, $5000K to fix that one. We travel back and forth between NM and Utah quite a bit and have learned it's best to do it in daylight hours. Too many damnn deer after dark.

I put a Ranch Hand steel bumper on the front of my truck. 2 deer and a can of black spray paint later I can say it was by far the best $800 I've ever spend on a vehicle! Did not even dent the bumper!

This has saved me in my truck...was moving my entire life belongings in my half-ton and a deer decided to step out mid-day. I live in MN so I'm not surprised but there was no swerving or slamming going on when everything I own is back there.

Last year I had a deer cross in front of my low-rider, it was at dusk, I slammed on the breaks, only to hit the gas and have deer's #2 and #3 come in pursuite, deer #2 took off my passenger mirror (didnt break the windows which I am amazed by), gave himself one helluva headache, and turned the other way, and deer #3 learned his lesson from #2 and turned around.

I've been in the situation before, but usually the deer continues to cross, especially when in a pack, but only deer 1 continued on its way which I thought was odd.

Re: Wildlife traffic Hazards

about 3 AM

I had a 6X6 Bull Elk in the median of a 6 lane highway trying to get over the concrete barrier, I slowed just as he turned and decided to retreat the way he came, needless to say we met I wound up going into the ditch at about 40 mph after he hit me just in front of the front door.

Caused about $7000 damage to my 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Cummins Crew Cab.

Did I mention I was headed to Elk Camp for Bow Season? I think it was a Preemptive Strike by the opposing Forces...

Yes I made it to Elk Camp

Traveling from Ft. Lauderdale to Miami back in the '80s. Found the interstate blocked by a small herd of bison that had broken out of a private estate.

Was driving down the road minding my own business a couple years ago when a flock of turkeys, jakes and hens, decided to fly across the road. Two side mirrors, one windshield and passenger door glass later I was back on the road. OH ! ! ! The turkey nuggets from one bird were fine! ! ! ! Three others in the freezer.

Re: Wildlife traffic Hazards

I almost hit a dear, luckily the deer looked both ways before crossing 0_o. Most people I know have hit 1 or more deer.

I think I found one of the deer that one of you hit. My g/f opened the sliding door to the back yard and saw two large glowing eyes looking up at her laying next to the house and the AC unit. I took a look and it was a deer that wasn't moving. The next morning it was still there, but there was also a lot of blood and a bone sticking out of it's leg. We called the town and they took it out with a 22 LR. Took a few shots to bring it down it even tried to run away with it's leg dangling by a small piece of skin. It was a young doe and they threw it in the truck as some of them love venison.
