Will 10amp charge from an outboard be enough to charge deep cycle?

I want to use a single deep cycle as my battery for my 80hp yamaha, it puts out 10 amps. I am going to be running a gps and stereo with a small amp. Will I damage a deep-cycle charging it only with my outboard? Would a dual-purpose battery be better?

thanks

depends on how long you keep your motor runing, and how long you use your electronics with the motor off. Stay with the deep cycle, if you trailer your boat just hook the battery up to a charger before each outing, and you should be ok for the day.

Jim

If you deeply discharge the deep cycle battery you would need to run wide open throttle for several hours to fully charge it. However, the devices you will be running don't present a huge current draw so you should be fine. If you have access to 110 AC when on the trailer, you should consider adding an on-board smart charger. It can be left plugged in continuously so you are always ready to go. A 6 amp unit (Guest for examle) would do nicely.

Thanks guys, Thats exactly what I do, (charge it in my yard with a smart charger before I go out) Someone told me that a deep cycle could damage my outboard but I guess that is not the case.

thanks

Who ever told you that it would damage your outboard has a damaged brain and i would suggest you never take any advise they give you. outboard motors and trolling motors is the primary use for deepcycle batteries. automotive batteries wont last 6 months in a boating application.
