Hi all:<br />question I have a 69 open bow 17ft boat in great shape<br />came with a 80hp merc 1979 which I'm taking off to rebuild. I was on ebay saw a nice johnson 140 hp 210 lbs. I think my merc is close to that<br />will it be to much power or weight. I don't know what is the right class motor for this size boat,<br />any help!!!<br /><br />Thanks Jim

Hello, Jim.<br /><br />Your boat is very unlikely to be rated for over 100hp. Don't overpower it. Check the USCG rating plate or sticker. If there isn't one, go to the USCG site for information from which to calculate maximum power.<br /><br />I doubt that your Merc 80 weighs only 210lb and I am very sure that a Johnny 140 weighs way over 350. The Johnny 140 4 stroke is over 400.<br /><br />Without the rating on your boat that's the best we can do.<br /><br />Good luck.

Thanks JB<br />I ordered a 70hp johnnyrude on ebay, they just informed me today that the truck was in an accident and the motor was damaged. They will refund my money but don't have any other 70 hp motors as of now I'll check with the USCG to see which motor will be max. <br />Thanks for the quick response<br />Jim

I'll play the other side and say that the amount you plan to overpower doesn't seem all that unreasonable. Just know what the consequences are and make sure the boat is structurally sound. If it is a crossflow OMC the weight should be around low 300's. I'm assuming your merc is an 85 inline4? Inline six (very similar) weighs 290 so your probably only adding 50 lbs or so. I'd be more concerned about buying a motor off of Ebay. There is lots of junk passed around on there.
