Hey,

My Merc dealer doesn’t even know the answer to this!

My ring was cracked so I bought a new one 8M0062440 but I need the bell housing, the parts fiche says I need 41646A7. It’s backordered until at least end of next week. And I’ve had issues this year getting parts that are listed as available. It looks like 41646a9 would work in this ring?

My drive and transom both have an oil feed but the bottle was deleted by the previous owner. I may add it back since the hardware is present.

The A9 part number is $120 more Canadian.

Do either parts come with the oil valve ? Any idea what the difference is?

Yes gimbal ring part number 8M0062440 fits all standard & magnum transom assemblies with bravo 1, 2, 3 to date and "some" X & XR Bravo drive/transom assembly models...OLD MERCRUISER PART NUMBERS INCLUDE:

http://www.mercstuff.com/gimbalrings.htm

Bell housing 41646A7 is designed slightly different up top and don't/shouldn't have two slots in the upper part to help clear some gimbal ring U-bolt nuts when over trimmed upwards especially on some later models as some have even bigger U-Bolts & nuts that needs more clearance....I happen to find a design reminder description in the following info for us,
41646A7 / 41646A 7.. MERCRUISER OLDER BRAVO 1-2-3 BELL HOUSING -FOR USE WITH DRIVES THAT HAVE TRIM SENDERS ON THE SIDE OF THE BELL HOUSING - COMES WITH SHIFT CABLE....FOR SOME DRIVES - 1989-2004 - OLDER STYLE - CHECK YOUR SERIAL NUMBERS!!, The shape of the bell housing is a little taller and narrower at the top on the older A7 bell housings.
You might need the 41646A9 . - YOU HAVE TO ORDER BY YOUR SERIAL NUMBER !!!!
IF YOU ORDER / INSTALL A A7 WHEN YOU NEEDED A A9 - THE BELL HOUSING MIGHT BIND

So the A7 should have the Oiler just a different design on the top. Someone told me the A7 doesn’t have the Oiler which makes no sense. I’m glad to see an A9 will work if I can’t find the A7 or don’t want to wait for it to come off backorder.

i wonder if it possible the A9 comes with the oil valve? And the A7 doesn’t? I’m trying to figure out why the A9 is about $90USD more ($120 cad)

Unless you find an A7 from 1988... The housing most likely will have at the very least the hole for the oiler if not the valve already installed depending on year the housing was actually made.

Why? Due to 1988 didn't use the oiler on the bravos while they made a running change and started using it in 89 but didn't change the part numbers when they added the hole and valve.....Plus some of this confusion sort of runs into the Alpha bell-housings as the oil system was considered an option from 1991 through 1995 on some models especially 3.0's / 4 cylinders...Most holes where drilled while some others weren't in the beginning.

The oil system was standard options on the bravos after 1989.

Depending on where you're buying the housing, one way to possibly know is to try and have someone take a look before selling/shipping it....Also look at the date code on the box...Again if at all possible.
