Will a car jumper battery pack start a 100hp outboard. If main battery is missing?

Any experiences? I wanted to take my emergency pack to go check a used motor for sale ,

Probably not... not for the reasons you might think either... The biggest problem is getting a decent connection to the motor. Using the big alligator clamps on to ring terminals results in very little surface area. Normally when you are using the jump pack you are connecting to nice soft lead posts, which let the alligator teeth sink in.

not likely.... if you ever take a jump pack apart all you will find is a 12v battery barely bigger than a jetski battery and a battery charger that recharges the pack when plugged into the wall. Nothing special... you would get the same results with a tiny batt and a set of jumper cables.

If the 100 outboard were in good running condition and normally started easily then maybe but generally those engines have a battery already hooked up.... You would be far better off taking a real battery.

Those jump packs are actually designed to recharge a dead battery in a few minutes, not replace a full size battery for a short burst of power.

However, I had no problem running a 130 HP 4 stroke jet ski off a very small 16 series two stroke style jet ski battery. So to answer your question, maybe....

No to mention if a motor is ran with out being hooked to a battery it will most likely fry the charging system.

No it won't work. If you want to test a motor, grab the battery out of your car when you get their or go rent one at the local Walmart. As long as you keep it clean and returning it within a couple days. Just say... "It's not the right size for my vehicle"

Some of the jump start units (Harbor Freight included) will not send any voltage or power to the clamps if it does not first read 12 volts at the connections. If there is no battery to start with, then it may not provide any power. If you spin the engine by hand then you may induce a voltage from the generator and get then some power there though, but I would not do it on my motor. I agree that a cheap lawn mower or other battery would work much better.

Yep, they are batteries.. Lead acid batteries. They ABSOLUTELY can start a well tuned motor, there are 260hp jet skis running those batteries. My snowmobile has one of those tiny batteries, and it is a 4 cylinder/4 stroke 150hp engine, that starts at -20. A popular mod in performance auto circles is to replace a full size car battery with a sealed lead acid battery, aka the exact same one inside the jump pack.

But... See post #2. (mine!) It won't work because of the really crappy connection, not the battery size.

I just tried this on a friends boat, but it wasn't an outboard, it's and I/o. Battery was there, but beyond dead. Fully charged jump pack spun it very slowly, with the plugs removed, and not at all with plugs in. I don't think those jumper packs have the cranking amps of a full size battery. I think they're made to jump an engine that has a marginal battery. Without a battery, I doubt it will crank. Take a car battery.

they don't have anywhere near the cranking amps of a full size batt.... if I at 6'4 250 lbs were a normal car batt then my 7 year old nephew would be a jump pack

a battery is a storage device. The larger the battery the larger the storage.
Physical limitation inside the battery limits the max ampage it can deliver instantly so it doesn't matter on the size just on the design limits which is based on the inches/square of the plates.
Beg, borrow a battery, (walmart loaner....lol)

I've used my $30 Kmart starter box to jump completely dead cars, ATVs, and boats. The cheaper units don't typically have the "brains" that the more expensive units carry (meaning that it doesn't need to detect a 12v connection). Bring a set of jumper cables and jump directly from your car battery if your starter box won't do it. No need to overthink the situation.
