I cruise at 3000-3500 rpm and have noticed that the bow rides kinda high even trimmed out.
Will this help me?
Hydrofoil Stabalizer
It seems that my on plane speed is about 4000 rpm but I cruise at 3000 or so.
Motor is a Evinrude 88 spl. pushing a 22" Lowe deckboat.

Thanks

They say it does all it says in your web site. Only the sites Iv'e been in say it drops your top end speed some, not faster. Was going to put one on mine, would also like to see what the guys say about them.

They only hurt top end if the engine height is not adjusted after its installed. On most runabouts a fin will allow a greater X dimension which increases top speed. Remember, a fin is simply a tool that allows you to do something else.

Good luck!

TPD211;

I assume the boat is a "V" hull design?

The added runing surface at the back of the boat will provide some lift which will drop your bow.

Like DHadley said the position of the hydrofoil in the water will make a lot of difference in top speed and handling. If the foil runs below the water it can act like a rutter and seriously affect handling. If you need to raise the motor because the foil is too deep in the water(which can cause handling problems) it sounds like a fair amount of work to get a little help. Because the surface area is small it generaly has marginal effect at slower speed with regard to lift as compared to trim tabs.

I personally have a problem with the claim that these are stabilizers. The added lift is concentrated in the center of the boat, which will make the side to side stability worse ( a teeter totter effect). This may not be too noticable at slower speeds but the faster the boat goes the more lift the foil will provide (at cruising / planing speed the boat does not need a lot of extra lift). This is also why many boat run slower. The added lift at higher speeds pushes the bow down, and the normal correction is to tilt the motor out to regain the proper running attitude. This makes the prop run through the water at an angle which is not efficient, resulting in lower top speeds. This simply costs more in both speed and fuel.

Do a search on this site / forum for Smart Tabs for this size boat.

Re: Will a Hydrofoil Stabalizer help me?

I think it's a cheap investment which may yield significant results - or may not. I have used it on two boats now, one big and one small. I ran it on my 90 last few years and last year I took it off one trip. After having it off, I wondered why everyone didn't have one - the difference was stark!
The biggest boost to performance is the hole shot- especially when loaded and especially when most of the weight is to the rear. Under light loads, there is no difference in top end but with heavy loads, top end is faster with the fin.
Other measurable differences (not imaginary) are being able to stay on the plane at lower speeds, (maybe to or three knots max), improved 'feel' to handling and the biggest difference by far is reduced ventilation. This allows me to trim the bow further up at speed, make turns at higher speeds and make tighter turns. Like I said, I wouldn't run without it.
Some people state it is a means to an end but I find it works all on its own. Perhaps my performance would increase even more if I made other complementry modifications, like the X-dimension. But thats a lot of work compared to simply installing the fin on its own.

TPD211

I would give it a try and if it doesn't work out(Which I believe it will), you can remove it and marinetex the holes up and touch them up with paint. I think this is on your deckboat you just got??? Worked wonders on my toon and runabout. Your on-plane RPM's should drop to about 3000 or less with it and the hole shot should be noticably quicker...

Thanks guys,

I think it is what I need for this big ol' deckboat. The 88 SPL is running fine, but I think the foil would help it plane at the 3000 rpm range and give the added benefit of increased gas mileage and the other benefits that were mentioned.

As usual, iboats to the rescue with great information. :D

Iv used them on many boats. Most times it helps ALOT. Speed reduction is not much compaired to getting on plane quicker. They do not help much with bigger boats/ heavier boats...Like about 23 footers. At least in my experience. Would I try it on yours.....Yes

they do as they say, they put you on plane quicker, since it reduces the amount the bow lifts from the wa-wa. some people notice a 2-3 mph off top end, if that doesnt matter, which most times it doesnt. get it ! i have it on my 17 CC and it did exactly as advrtised

Re: Will a Hydrofoil Stabalizer help me?

I added a stingray hydrofoil to my 17' Arima and the improvement was dramatic. It gets up faster, planes at lower speeds and it added 12% to the top end speed. I got a lot of advice to go with trim tabs or smart tabs but for $40 and 15 minutes installation time you can't argue with these results:
Chart

CaptainPuget - Most excellent graph
My boat is bigger/heavier and my needs are different so I'm going with SmartTabs. Hope to post the same type of results data come summer.

I have them on my V4 twins sittin on the back of my 23' CC. I also have tabs.

They will also reduce the wander a bit when puttin at no wake speed.

Re: Will a Hydrofoil Stabalizer help me?

I've added them to my 13 foot boat, a 16 foot fiberglass underpowered with a 55, a 16 foot aluminum overpowered with a 70 and a 18 foot Javelin F/S which has way too many ponies with a 150. Well, the 150 was purchased with it, but all others were added. All boats showed improved performance, top end, and reduced planing speed. The 16 foot aluminum finally stopped "reaching for the stars" when trying to get on plane. Now it stays perfectly flat! I would swear by them on any boat capable of planing over.

Oh boy, I hit the 200 post mark. A historic day! :p

Re: Will a Hydrofoil Stabalizer help me?

I installed a SST Hydrofoil today.
Boat does plane better and at a lower speed also.
I seem to have gained 50-100 rpm also.
20 bucks well spent.....
