Will a Mercruiser 260 fit?

I have a 1985 thompson bowrider 18'-4" it had a mercruiser 470 in it. I have found a good deal on a Mercruiser 260 v-8 do you think it will fit? I dont have motor dimmensions. I know I will have to change the gearing I can get the upper unit with the engine.

It depends on the space you have in your current engine bay. I'd say probably, but take some measurements and post some pics to be sure. You'll need a bit of extra length, plus width, and most importantly you'll have to rebuild your engine mounts.

It's not just the gears that are different. With the 260 engine make sure you get everything for the engine including the Y pipe, flywheel housing, etc and check beforehand to see if they fit your existing parts... I don't think they're the same. You'd be much safer getting an entire 260 with the inner and outer transom.

Be aware you're adding weight to the boat in the worst spot, and you'll probably want to shift something forward to compensate if you can.

Again, post some pics and make some measurements of your existing boat, and we can go from there.

Thanks for the info. The width between the stringers is 30". I will be taking almost anything of value out of the boat that Im getting the motor from. The only thing missing on the boat is the lower unit, and the windshield.

I forgot I will be taking the fuel tank which is right infront of the engine bay and transferring it forward, making more room in the bay.

How does this sound? Think it will fit?
