will an 1987 3.0 alternator work in a 2002 3.0?

i know its the same engine, but the older one was from a points ignition, and much larger then the one in the 2002 3.0 engine with electronic ignition. i just want to make sure theres not a regulator or somthing in one and not the other. if it does work, it will save me some cash for now. does anyone have any info they can share with me. thanks, nick
