Will boat in water freeze?

I have neglected to take my boat (v8 I/O) out of the lake yet. (The TVA has left the lake up about 7' from previous years) I have been told that as long as it is in the water, it will not be damaged by freezing temps. I am not sure that I believe that, or want to take a chance. Does anyone out there have an opinion? It is supposed to be in the 20's tonite.

Happy Thanksgiving,

GK

When the water temperature is above freezing, it will keep a CLOSED engine compartment warmer than the outside air. I have left my boat in the water at 10° in 40° water with no problems. But that was salt water and it doesn't freeze as easily as fresh water plus the was rain water in the bilge that didn't freeze either but it was right next to the hull.
If your water temp is around 40 and the air is only supposed to be in the 20's you should be fine. But if you don't want to take the chance, don't. Just drain any engine system that has lake water in it. If fresh water cooled, that would be the block, the manifolds and risers, any powersteering coolers and whatever else you have on your particular engine that has water in it.

Don S,
Thanks for the quick reply. I never thought of draining the engine with it still in the water.

GK

GK, it sounds like you are probably in GA or Tenn. If so, what is the water temp, mid 60's or so?

If so, I bet you run VERY little risk of damage from freezing at temps in the 20's with your boat sitting in the water. Still, thats easy for me to say that when it's your boat, lol.

Actually, I live in NC and faced the same issue a couple of weeks ago. I've got an I/O and min temp was forecast at 27 degrees; lake temp was low 70's. I've got a covered boathouse with open sides and didn't put the boat in the water, but did lower the lift to just above it. I've got one of those electronic thermometers that captures max and min temps about 7 feet above the water. It registered an overnight min of 32. Obviously the closer to the water the warmer the min temp would be, so I had a larger margin than that. Thats about as close as I'd cut it without either draining or actually putting my boat in the water, though.

An interesting experiment would be to use 2 of those electronic thermometers and see how big a difference there was between the minimum temp in the engine compartment overnight as compared to the min temp on land a couple hundred feet away from the lake. If anyone aver tries it, maybe let us know beforehand and we could have a pool. Person who guesses closest to the actual temperature difference wins.

If I were you, I would just play it safe. It takes about 5 minutes to open all the drains. time well spent... Oh, and leave the drive in the down position so it stays in the water....

The advice you were given is correct but dont take it for face value.Only trust it in a pinch. You can get away with it now but not in a few weeks when it get s a little colder.Charlie
