Will fuel pump kit do the job?

Hi. I own a 50 hp. 1984 Mercury outboard. I'm thinking of getting a fuel pump kit for it. My question is, if fuel-related problems lead you to the fuel pump, what good does a "kit" do? How do you know you just don't need a new fuel pump altogether? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A fuel pump kit and a fuel pump are the same thing on that engine. The fuel pumps are on the side of each carb and they work off of the changes in pressure in the engines crankcase.

The fuel pump kit provides you with all of the necessary diaghrams and gaskets to rebuild it. While you are there, get the whole carb kit (I may be wrong, but I think it is all one kit) and rebuild the whole carb(s). It is easy to do. Once you have the carbs off, it is about a 1 hour job to do both carbs.

Hint...The carbs are easy to get off once you remove the front cowling support. I learned that the hard way.

IF the fuel pump is not working correctly it will be because of a part or parts that are replaced with the kit.

Everything else is a metal casting.

A kit in the fuel pump will not fix problems that are actually in the fuel supply system or the fuel.
