Will HOT GLUE seal a bearing seal, leaking on the outter edge?? Serious question!

Last week I replaced the bearing seal on my upper housing (around my spline shaft) and it?s still leaking around the outer edge. Immediately I posted a question about using Loctite threadlocker to seal up a leaking bearing seal. Many of you replied that you use the same or similar adhesive and some said RTV. Well, I?ve been waiting on a new bearing seal for a week so I could try this method of installation. Today I found out my parts house didn?t ship the parts to me. An honest mistake, but costly for my kids and me because we were all looking forward to a fishing trip this weekend.

In order to try to salvage this weekend?s fishing trip I have an idea I want to bounce off you folks. Assuming I can remove the bearing seal that?s currently installed, without damaging it. I need some kind of adhesive that will act as a filler around the outer edge of my bearing seal. But, with time constraints I need to use something that will harden quickly so I can get at least a 12 hour pressure test done within these next 24 hours before leaving for my trip. It also needs to be a product that will withstand the heat that is produced from the outdrive. I have no clue what that temp is.

What do you all think about resetting this bearing seal with hot glue? I know that probably sounds crazy. Right now I?m desperate to try something. I can?t find the melting temp. of hot glue on the Internet, but I would think that?s it much hotter than the internal temps. of an outdrive (unknown temp). If this will work and hold pressure for at least 12 hours I will have to accept that as passing if I?m going to take this trip. Thoughts / Suggestions? I?m willing to stay up all night working on this thing if you guys will toss me a few bones on this one.

Yes, I know Don.. I started that thread. On one hand you're my Saviour and on the other my biggest critic. :) Somehow I knew you would think it was a crazy idea, but hey I'm actually in a desperate moment. Tell me this... if you don't think Hot Glue will work... how can I speed up the cure time of Loctite Thtreadsealer... mild heat from a heat gun?

If you had used the Loctite the other day, it would have been dry by now.

Put the stuff on, put it all back together, and start it the next day.

Agreed, but I was waiting on a new seal... and washer for the spliune shaft. Working on getting the new "newly installed" one out now without damaging it.

I got the bearing seal out. It was just slightly warped. I used a few different size sockets to tap it back into shape… had to eyeball it though. Looks pretty good to me.

OK Don... I'll do the threadlocker.... especially since I found this specification sheet for Permetex 27100 threadlocker on the Internet. Note the excerpt below on curing. I now have a hair dryer blowing at low heat on this thing to try and cure out the 27100. Hope this does the trick!

http://www.permatex.com/documents/tds/automotive/27100.pdf

Cure speed vs. temperature
The rate of cure will depend on the ambient temperature. Full
cure is attainable in 24 hours at room temperature, 22C
(72F), or 1 hour at 93C (200F).
