good day all: well the recoil spring on my old johnson broke.so tis is what i did,the sring broke at the end of the spring, which has a rivited on eye.i had to heat the end of the sring up,to d-temper it a bit so i could drill another hole.i re rivited the eye to the end of the sring and re assembled the whole spring/ starter assembly.
i have 2 questions? how long will the de tempered sring hold.
in the center of the rope/spring disk there is a cylindrical piece of steel that the bolt goes through to hold it to the starter cage(where the pullstart comes out of)should there be a washer under this steel cylinder, because with out it when i tighten up the bolt it binds the pullstart to the point where i cant pull it.
Z

I expect it will last as long as the quality of your work. It's good practice not to rely on the pull start and bring the necessary tools and rope to emergency start the engine if you run into problems. You'll notice there's notches in the flywheel for this - it's how they used to start outboards before they made 'self rewinding starters.'
There's no washer before the spindle. You must be binding on something. There's only two things I can think of -
1) Your clamping down on the springy thing that connects the hub to the pawl. It clips on the groove in the spindle.
2) There's not a lot of tolerance for that spring. Perhaps it's getting jamed betweeen the pulley and housing. I seem to remember this happening to me before... :)
Finally, there's not a lot of tolerance between the pulley and the flywheel. If you used a washer, you'll probably get the engine making quite a racket.

Good luck!

Hi Zanman
Paul is correct. Sometimes this repair will last quite a while sometimes not. The good news is that you can order new springs from your napa auto parts dealer. They don't cost much. They are cheeper to replace than repair.

its better to replace the spring but if for some reason you have to drill one again use a masonry bit and you don't have to heat it. I know it ain't rock or cement but will work
