Will lower unit from a commercial motor work on a non-com motor?

I have an '87 Johnson 90HP VRO outboard, with a bad lower unit. I found one on Ebay from a '75 Johnson 70HP motor. I don't know as of yet if it is a commercial model or not. <br /> What I need to know is if a lower unit from a commercial motor will work on a non commercial motor? <br /> If not, could someone tell me why?

Yes a commercial lower will fit on a recreational motor as long as the bolt pattern is the same. <br /><br />HOWEVER, a 3 cylinder (75) will not bolt up to a V4 (90).<br /><br />Whats wrong with yours?

Posiden<br /><br />As a general rule: The 3 cylinder comm. engines had v-4 gearcases and the v-4 comm's. had v-6 gearcases.
