will marine tex bond to "Git-Rot"?

I've decided to patch up my stringers for now and pull the motor and restringer the boat in the winter....

Just looking for a fix that'll last for a season....

My stringers are rotted where the motor mounts to them and I bought some git-rot and marine tex. My plan is to drill out the holes in the stringers to 1"... fill with sawdust and git rot, let it dry, then drill the git rot out to 3/4" and fill with marinetex. Then I plan to drill and tap the marine tex for the motor mount studs.

My question is... will the marinetex stick to the sawdust and git rot?

Git rot claims it restores wood to stronger then it was originally and when using sawdust with it I would think marine tex should bond to it.

Will the marine tex bond to git rot?

I think they are both epoxy base so yeh.
Your fix sounds a bit shaky...;)
best take it easy on the water.

Replace them the right way. The method you have described hill only repair "spots" and not provide strength the entire length.

Do a bit more research and you will see there is no shortcut.

I know it's a hack fix but I'm not gonna pull my floor up right now... I'll do it in the winter.

Just want to get a few more trips out of it. Up until know, most of the studs were flopping around....

I don't have the means to pull the motor right now, or the time and money.

Hopefully this'll work for a little while.:(

If you are going to hack it (I don't blame you this late in the season) why don't you just attach a couple of pieces of wood under the mounts on top of the stringers and call it day? Seems to me if you are pulling it all apart in a month or two then you will be wasting the marine tex and git-rot. Just my 2 cents.

I've thought about it but even splicing wood in there I would need to pull the motor to make it worthwhile.

Git rot is a waste of time on anything as large as a stringer or transom.
It was designed for cosmetic repair on old houses not for structural repair. If your not going to replace the rotted wood then the only fix would be to sister up some supports for now and lay down some plywood but pretty much anything you do will be adding weight and the boat's strength will still be compromised.

Any repair worth doing is worth doing right, you will only be throwing good money away on any temporary repair.

I'd call it a yr and get started on fixing it for next yr.

I hear you guys and I would like to do it right but I don't have the means and I want to take the boat out a few more times this season. I went ahead and tried the git rot last night and got some pretty good results.

I'm fairly impressed with the stuff... I packed about 1/2 gallon of sawdust in the motor mount holes (kept drilling 1" holes and filling with saw dust around them then drilled a bunch of 1/4" holes to insure full saturation). Pretty damn solid with the saw dust.

It does say it is used for structural repairs on the box (if that means anything:rolleyes:). I'm gonna let it set up for a couple more hours then drill into to see what the consistency is. Done right I think this fix may last a while even though its hack.
