will my tach from 2cyl work with 3 cyl

Hi (posted in another part of iboats too) I just changed my 92 40 hp 2 cyl Johnson to a '98 3 cyl 70 hp Johnson. Took boat out today for a test run and was amazed at the speed ('92 Bass tracker tx 17) Will my tach be reading properly with the change to my new (old) 3 cyl ?

it should. there should be a setting on the back of the tach itself.

They are both 6 Pulse - If it works on one it should work on the other.

Tach has a label that says.. For Johnson /Evinrude motors 6 pulse. the motor is Johnson 70 hp, When the motor is idleing (sounds like it is maybe 900 to 1000 rpms) the tach reads a little under 4000 rpms. There is no switch to change like some 1,2,3,4,6.
There is a small hole that says calibration. Is this something I should adjust ?

The tach should go to 0 when the ignition switch is turned to on. If it does not, recheck the connections.​

If the tach goes to zero, track the gray wire from the main harness to the rectifier lead and move the gray wire to the yellow and gray alternator wire on the terminal block.

The calibration screw is for very fine tuning with a master tachometer to guide you. Don't change it.​

Doah ! (the sound Homer Simpson makes) I found this info.
I called Tracker Marine, they forwarded me to Teleflex Marine

My tach is a teleflex that came in '92

40 hp is a 5 p
70 hp is a 6 p

I found the adjuster dial (after looking at the picture of the tach on the link) It was incorectly set to 4 anyway !!!

Now set at 6p, I will see on the weekend how it works

Did not mean to lead you astray on that, but I was also relying on Teleflex, specifically page 6 of their installation instructions for tachometers. It appears to directly contradict the chart that they gave you.

Hmm I see what you mean. I called teleflex @ 1-941-907-1000 ext 8222 which is their customer service rep. He is the one I got the info from. I wonder if they know that there is conflicting info on their webpages ?

I think it may be possible that some 40hp are 6 pulse, causing the confusion? Just a thought.
