I have a 1968 Merc 20hp 200twin, think its the short shaft model.
I have had it for yrs and no major problems. I was going into a shallow area with lots of weeds so I tilted it up so it would not drag thru the weeds or hit bottom.
When I left the shallows I let it back down and it fired right up. Put it in forward gear and it would not go much faster than idle speed. The handle twist all the way to fast and it should have went to full power, but engine did not increase.
Took it home and put it in my test barrel of water to check it out and when I gave it full power in forward gear there was no problem, it went full power.
Any idea what the problem is. Seems like under load it will not go fast. I am no mechanic so I can't get into tearing it down. Taking the flywheel off and tuning it up is about as far as I go.
I'm puzzled, what could have happened by tilting the motor up to make it not advance to full speed. Strange that in the tank it goes full speed but in the lake under load it won't.
