Will not go full speed after I tilted motor up

I have a 1968 Merc 20hp 200twin, think its the short shaft model.

I have had it for yrs and no major problems. I was going into a shallow area with lots of weeds so I tilted it up so it would not drag thru the weeds or hit bottom.

When I left the shallows I let it back down and it fired right up. Put it in forward gear and it would not go much faster than idle speed. The handle twist all the way to fast and it should have went to full power, but engine did not increase.

Took it home and put it in my test barrel of water to check it out and when I gave it full power in forward gear there was no problem, it went full power.

Any idea what the problem is. Seems like under load it will not go fast. I am no mechanic so I can't get into tearing it down. Taking the flywheel off and tuning it up is about as far as I go.

I'm puzzled, what could have happened by tilting the motor up to make it not advance to full speed. Strange that in the tank it goes full speed but in the lake under load it won't.

Re: Will not go full speed after I tilted motor up

Forgot to add, this happened last year, and if my memory is correct. I think in reverse I could get power to advance past idle speed, just couldn't get full power forward while in the lake.

A buddy of mine ask if the pump bulb/fuel line on the tank was old, I said not more than a few yrs. He said try changing the rubber fuel line and pump bulb on the fuel tank, so I did. But I haven't made it out to the lake to test it.

Re: Will not go full speed after I tilted motor up

so anyone have any idea about my problem?

Also, yesterday I went to start it up and rope broke. After I replaced a new rope and tightend the coil I went to pry the little tab up on the lock washer and the tab broke off. This tab is what keeps the nut from turning. I have look all over the interent and can't find one.

Maybe I am using the wrong words, I have tried Recoil nut lock washer, recoil lock washer, etc and nothing came up. I don't really want to run it without the nut being locked in by the lock washer tab, vibration may loosen the nut.

you can try iboats engine parts, they may have a parts manual for your ordering convenience.

Tks for the reply, I appreciate it. I looked there and couldn't find anything. I found this site from another thread I read in here, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...39&bnbr=2&bdesc=TOP+COWL+AND+STARTER+ASSEMBLY .

And found what it was called, its a TAB WASHER, SHEAVE SHAFT part 37 on that link. I am hoping I can find one at a nearby marine. Or even maybe NAPA auto parts, I did find a condenser and points for my 1968 20hp Merc a few yrs back at NAPA. So they may have the tab washer.

Just trying to get it running so I can go out and see if the new tank hose fixed the real problem of not advancing to full throttle. Only time it will go full throttle in with the water hose ears on. Like I said, in the lake under load it will not go more than idle speed forward. That seems weird to me. I thought maybe fuel filter but from the parts diagram it doesn't look like the 68's had a filter.
