hi all well its about time to get here in the water went to fire up the motor, inline 6 250ci 165hp the motor is a 1973. well it cranks but will not fire even if i put gas down the carb. i pulled 1 of the plugs to check for a spark and it did turn over and seemed like it wanted to run with the plug out and even time i try you can see some smoke comeing out of the prop so i am confused now i did pull the plugs in winter and when i did i wrotw on the wire 1-6 on them from front to back so any ideas would be nice thanks..

Re: will not run

Pull the coil wire out of the center of the distributor cap. Hold the end 3/8 to 1/2" from a clean un-painted ground and crank the engine over. Should get a bright blue/white spark that easily snaps across the gap, Yellow is the same as none.

Your battery is charged up and cranking the engine over at normal speeds isn't it, slow cranking because of a wimpy battery isn't going to work either, plus all the terminals need to be clean and tight.

the batt is fully charged and checked as good when i pulled 1 of the plugs and checked the sparks it was a nice blue but with the plug out the motor almost seems like it wants to run i wounder if bad plugs and wires would keep it from running the motor ran fine last year before it was pulled.

Might pull the cap and check for moisture or cracks.

Re: will not run

I'd do as Don advises, only I like to hook the coil wire up to a spark plug and check it that way. All 6 sparks will come through the one plug. If you have good spark there, it points at the dist/wires. If not, you are missing something in the coil/points part of the system (Like a good +12, or a good ground, etc).

I'd do a quick compression test just to see if there is anything major. Probably not, I think you are on the right track.

I know you poured fuel down the intake, but do you see a fuel squirt from the accel pump circuit in the carb when you cycle the throttle? The reason i ask is sometimes the fuel pour will take time to hit the right air/fuel mixture (IE: Wont run), or you can flood it...It's not totally conclusive that it's an ignition problem.
