I have a 1976 70hp that will not do any thing when the key is turn to the start position. What I need is some help in detecting the cause of the problem. This year does not have a kill switch on the controls.

Re: will not start

I don't think it has a kill switch, but if it did that would not stop the engine from turning over, just from starting.
Start by checking all the battery cable connections on both the engine and battery, they have to be clean and tight.
There is a fuse in the system, look near the big harness connector inside the engine cover, inside a rubber boot and see if it is good.

Thanks for the reply; I have replaced the battery and check all the connection all is clean and tight, the little fuse is good.

Have you checked for voltage at the starter solenoid, where the battery cable attaches to the solenoid, what is the voltage measurment there?

Re: will not start

the voltage on the solenoid is 12.4. but nothing at the starter. When I jump from solenoid to starter it will engage, so I will replace the solenoid.

Check that your solenoid to ground is ok, it may save you some $$$$
