I have '99 Force it will not turn over with key but I can cross sileniod and it will turn over. I 'm not sure if it is seliniod or ignition switch i also had some wires melt or burn like I had a crossed ground I traced all wires and couldn't find cause but fixed all wires. how can i test selinoid or ignition switch. or is there somthing else should i look at.

Neutral interlock switch could be your problem. If motor is not correctly in neutral or the wire to it is fried it wont start. On the starter solenoid is a small post with probably a yellow wire going to it. Jumper a wire from the positive lead of the battery to that leg. If motor spins it is not the solenoid.

Re: Will not turn over with key

The interlock switch is probably located on the starboard side of the power head. It is just a small switch that closes when the motor is in neutral. follow the wire on the small post of the starter solenoid back and you should be able to find the switch. Use an ohm meter between the contacts on the switch and verify it is open normally. Then toggle it closed and see if you read a short. Make sure battery is disconnected when you do this. If switch is good follow the wire on the other side of the switch back to the electrical strip and verify you are getting 12 volts when you turn the switch to the on position. This could be your ignition switch is bad or the wiring or the interlock switch.

I traced wire back to ignition switch I couldn't find interlock switch I tested wire for breaks from switch to motor it is good . I think it is the ignition switch is bad but there are two small posts on solenoid i have continuity between those two posts one post runs to a ground the other post runs to my ignition switch .Does anyone know if i should have continuity between these two posts.

Re: Will not turn over with key

not real sure what your up against,, However over the weekend I had a similar problem, turned the key and nothing. I started taking voltage and I found a circuit breaker on the outboard that was tripped. Standing behind the outboard on the left underneath some wires I found it and reset it by pushing a tab on it. Maybe or Maybe not! I figure any info. is good info.
good luck

The interlock switch is on the starboard side by the shift linkage. The shift arm pushes up on a white plastic button in the switch when you are in neutral this completes the circuit to the ignition hot wire that energizes the solenoid when starting. Look on your terminal block. Find the wire that goes to the solenoid. Then follow the wire attached to it on the other side of the terminal block over to the other side of the motor, it will terminate at the switch switch. All Forces have them, yours is no exception.

Re: Will not turn over with key

Continuity test will show very low ohms. Almost a short. Mine reads about 2.6 ohms. Without going into too much electronic theory here is what is happening. With that low a resistance the wire involved in the choke circuit is creating a voltage divider so that the total 12 volts can not get to the solenoid. This is normal because it only takes about 9 volts to make the solenoid work. Take all the connectors that have anything to do with the choke and clean them with either sand paper or a file including the screws and nuts they connect to. This would be the ignition switch connection the barrier strip where it connects from the wiring harness to the motor. The neutral interlock switch and the solenoid. You mentioned you dont have a interlock switch but you must have one. Otherwise your motor could start in gear and that is very dangerous. This pic is of my 45 HP Chrysler. Yours should be similar
