Will parts from a 96 Force 90hp fit a late 89 Force 85hp?

Looking at a parts motor (96) for 100 bucks.... No lower unit on it.

Are the coil packs and stator interchangeable on the 2? Its a hike to get it and I don't want to burn the gas if nothing is going to fit my 85hp. I could've used a spare starter last week.... Thank god for kicker motors!

Forgot to mention... Mine is from the tail end of the production year so its more merc than chrysler. Not sure how much of a difference it makes.

Its well worth the $100 and the gas money. The starter alone can cost $50 off of eBay, and the rest of the ignition components can be worth three times what he's asking. As far as compatibility, I'm not sure.

To get it to work you have to get a 1990 -1995 flywheel that is used on the Mercury switchbox type ignition that has the six separate magnets and use the end cap bearing seal/stator mount off of the 1996 motor. The hole in the 1996 flywheel and later motors is larger than the 1995 and earlier motors.

Wiring is completely different, so you have to transfer the coil mounting plate and wiring harness from the 1996 motor and adapt it to you harness. The holes in coil mounting plate from the 1996 motor don't match up exactly with the ones on the 1989 motor so you have to make an adapter.

Thanks for the info.... Think I'll pass on it. Don't really want to start parting out motors...

The starter is maybe the only thing that will work.
The rest of the motor is Merc. parts.
What happened to it?
Might be worth it to sell the parts on e-bay??
