Ayuh,.... I'd think goin' from a 17" prop to a 21" prop is gonna overload yer motor...

The Rooster tail is a function of motor Trim, not prop pitch...

Rooster tail is a function of lost thrust. The bigger and longer the rooster tail, the slower the boat will be going off its potential top speed. The "Myth" derives from performance boats of years ago. These high powered boats did throw a big tail and thus it was equated with power and speed.

Did you ever see a 30 foot cruiser up on plane doing 25 MPH and throwing a massive well curved tail? That tail doesn't mean the boat is going very fast or is extremely powered.

There is some rooster tail on these boats, but nothing to brag about and that's the way I like it.

If you are talking about tilting the engine till the prop almost surfaces out and making a show, I don't think prop pitch will matter to the length of rooster tail you can generate. I can tell you that that is running the engine lightly loaded. It is an easy way to over-rev and possibly do damage. AND to those who know, it does not demonstrate a powerful engine (which many men equate with a big member)

On your bass boat the rooster tail should be about the height of your cowl at WOT trimmed out for max speed. No rooster tail means your motor is mounted to low and your prop is buried. A 30' tall rooster tail means your motor is mounted too high and your wasting energy. It really has nothing to do with pitch of the prop.

What are your other numbers like WOT RPMs and what Mercury 150 do you have? Are you seeing 50MPH on a GPS or speedo? What 21P vented prop are you looking at?

my wot rpm was around 6100 so to high i want to get it to 5500 and the motor is a 84 blackmax 150 and speed was done with gps. i dont really have a prop picked out yet i just want to get one that will give good holeshot and have more topend. i plan on fishing tournoments and the faster you can get to your fishing hole the more time you can fish.

Yeah you need more prop. Try a Tempest Plus in 19 pitch. You should pick up speed and drop some RPMs. I would want to turn that motor to the top of it's recommend WOT range.
