Bought a rebuilt carb on ebay for $50. it says "MCM 170/470 1389-8489" on the tag, and is a 2bbl mercarb, i'm assuming for a 170/470. however, i can't seem to cross reference that part # except on ebasicpower. i wanted a spare as i attempt to rebuild my original...

Does the carb appear to be the same as yours? Those carbs were used on a lot of boats, and for the most part as long as it bolts up and has the same fuel connections and such it'll work fine. Just make sure it's a marine carb - there is a difference.

IIRC,that should be a 2bbl Rochester carb. It's an easy one to rebuild. PM me if you still need a kit, I have a spare one left over that I no longer need and would love to sell it to you at a discounted price.

The only real trick to rebuilding these is the setup process when putting it on the boat. Do you know how to adjust the idle settings and adjust the accelerator pump. Do you have a dwell/tach meter and a timing gun?

yeah, they look the same. this is a mercarb. i'm just curious as to why the 470 engine would have so many different carb part #'s, or rather, if they're all interchangeable. i would guess that they would be, but i don't know.

I guess you ought to wait for someone who can run the numbers for you. If it appears to be the same carb it may still have a different CFM rating or different jets, although the jets will change between the two. I do have a spare set of jets that came in a 3.7 165hp also if you need them.

You can see if the CFM rating is the same by measuring the bore diameter.
