Will this hurt anything??

I was draining my lower unit oil and thought the gear shift arm pin was the drain plug (located below fill hole) and removed it. After a further search I found the actual drain plug and replaced the pin. The engine was not turned over or shifted while pin was out, I pretty much just removed then replaced it. Thanks!

It it shifts, your fine. Means the yolk didn't fall out of place. You can do with the motor off ...have someone turn the prop while you shift. If nothing, the whole guts have to come out to replace the pin through the shift yolk. Lots of work, seal kits, and a new crush washer

Roscoe, looked at some of those post links.......
This .........."advice & wisdom... Is it possible to remove the water pump and housing & access the pivot from above to correct or is further dismantling required? .......
Possible you could TRY this (I had a snapped driveshaft so everything had to come out). I have a lower in my shop I will look at. You might have enough wiggle room. It would have to come out anyway if not, so no harm trying

I think I may have dodged a bullet... The props spins free in neutral but locks when put into fwd or reverse. I mean its either in the yolk and working or it falls out and dosen't shift. Correct? BTW thanks for the help on this major stupidity violation...

Yes, on some lower units you can get at it from the top, some you can't.

Cross your fingers. I know of one person that thought they had it back in, ran it for several hours, then it let loose.

I don't know about that..either its in or it isn't. No other place for it to go. Could have been something else. The fork goes into a pin in the shift rod, and there is simply no way it could fail just because the pin was removed, and put back in. I know first hand of a guy down the street who pulled the pin, let some oil out, then put it back in because he felt it wasn't right. Been years, and still works fine. I will start a new post with a pic of a lower I took today, and some info and part numbers, so lets start a new thread/topic

Re: Will this hurt anything??

Reason is the shift rod is holding up the pivot part, and the fork is resting on the yolk pin. If it doesn't get jarred, sometimes ya get lucky. Stupid move on the manufacturer not to put a aluminum plug (press fit) over it
