I have a 65esl-72s and I purchased a 60esl-71c lower unit. Does any one know if the parts all the parts are interchangable? I cant trun the drive shaft on my old unit and this 60esl seems to be in great shape except someone cut the shift solinoid cables.

According to my parts sources not only the gear case but also the forward gear and other internals are different part numbers.Based on that,I would say that the two are not interchangabel.

ok well thien i guess I will use it as my rebuild guide. I have never had to rebuild a lower unit. I have the manual but it sure does say you need a lot of speacial tools. Is this very hard to do? I have done just about evrything you can thing of in the automotive field engines transmissions diferentials but this will be my first lower unit.

Man i swear this thing could fit it look just like the 65esl side by side just different water pump housing caps

Fairly involved on a complete rebuild.Particularly not having all of the special tolls required to perform it flawlessly.Personally I'd bring it to a reputable shop and get a quote.A good one will stand behind and warrant their work.Might be a safer option. That's providing they can obtain new parts for that vintage.May just need bearings and seals.

I'd guess 3 1/2 to 4 hours labor plus any parts.Labor charges may vary from region to region but I'd figure around $60 per hour. So, $250 or so plus parts.Of course only a tech estimate could be specific.

$60 per hour I wish it was that cheap around here. It is $90 per hour minimum around here for anything marine related.

Both are hydro-electric units. If the bolt spacing is the same they should both bolt up. If the spline count on the driveshaft is the same they should both fit the crank. They do use different water pumps. See if the plate from your water pump fits on the donor unit.

The 60esl will fit but it is busted as well. It looks like the pinion thrust bearing and shims failed and then the pinion is all chewed up. So i guess i need to find a rebuilt unit to fit my motor or drop 400 in parts to fix the 65esl.
