Will this manifold work with my 140 OMC?

Hi all,

I'm on the hunt for a manifold/riser and carb for my 1978 OMC 140 w/stringer outdrive. I've found this manifold and riser, and would like to know if it will work with my engine/outdrive setup. The exhaust and intake ports on the head of my engine look slightly different than the ones on this manifold. Here's a pic of the manifold I'm considering and one of my engine:

Thanks in advance,

-Ryan

Best thing to do is get a manifold gasket that fits your engine then place it on the manifold and check port alignment; there have been some variaitions in the heads on these. Nice job on engine/bilge area!

Re: Will this manifold work with my 140 OMC?

Thanks for the reply.

I can tell by looking at the manifold that it has slightly different ports than the head on my engine. Unfortunately this manifold is nowhere near where I live, so I would need to decide if it works from the photos.

Anybody else got any ideas?

Thanks again,

-Ryan

Ayuh,... I donno if it'll line up with the outdrive, but it'll bolt to the head,+ run...

It will bolt to the head and run, but is there going to be any power loss due to the ports not lining up correctly? It looks like it might be a bit of a bottleneck for intake and exhaust flow.

Thanks,

Re: Will this manifold work with my 140 OMC?

Has anyone ran a manifold like this on a head like this? This one appears to be slightly different than the head.

The manifold is from a cobra, and I have a stringer. Is it going to cause any problems like power loss, etc?

Thanks in advance,

-Ryan

If you bolt it on as is, yes, you will lose a noticeable amount of power due to flow restriction.

You can port match the manifold and make it work. Get a gasket that matches your motor ports, place it on the manifold with a few bolts loose in the holes, then mark the exposed metal areas with a permanent marker.

Get a cheap electric (or air) die grinder, put a carbide cutter tip in it, put the manifold in a vise and grind away the places with marker on them. Don't go past the marker, or you will add restriction again.

Flush it out with water to get the filings out and bolt it on.

Then get the metal filings out of your hair, down your neck, in your shirt pocket.
