I have just bought a 15'6" tril hull. boat is not heavy. I have a 10 hp motor. I will connect to steer arm and will retro fit a throttle cable to and shift lever cable to. Will this be enough to move the boat. I am not looking to win a race. I am looking to get out on nickajack lake in eastern tn. As I live 20 mins from it.

Thanks in advanced.

It should be fine, I push a 20 foot pontoon around with a 9.9.

The motor doesn't care how big the boat is UNLESS it is propped too high and won't allow it to get up to proper RPM and "lugg". If you suspect this is the case you may be able to buy a lower pitched prop.

I don't know much about props for small motors and if you can get different pitches.

You should be fine, don't expect it to plane out though. It should move you around at 6-8mphs, enough to get to a fishing hole or out to the middle to drink of beverage of your choice. What you should look at is shaft length. Does the cavatation plate on the motor reach the bottom of your transom while resting on your boat?

like the guy with the pontoon, it will put around with a tailwind you by yourself and that's about it.

there's a guy around here who uses a "free" boat like that with a 9.9 to get to his sailboat mooring out in front of his house. Not much utility for anything else.

don't get caught by bad weather; that's when a seriously underpowered boat is dangerous.

Welcome aboard Nickcunn ... I'd be careful with that rig on Nickajack. The 10'll push ya', not very quickly at all but it'll push ya'.

The hitch is two fold: Nickajack is an impound ... meaning river. That water is flowing (at least a little). Nickajack is also fairly wide open, allowing a decent wind flow. You could have trouble maneuvering, with just 10HP on that boat.

I got caught in a pop-up storm on Normandy Lake one day ... surprised the tar outta' me, and it literally built outta' nowhere (not uncommon here in TN). Within about 10 minutes, I was in 3' seas and 30MPH sustained winds ... completely caught off guard. With your rig, I'd have likely gotten chucked up on the rocks.

Watch your weather close, and get a feel for how she does. If you feel like your fighting it to maneuver (and generally low speed will be your bigger problem), change your setup early on. Don't wait until you're in trouble.

And enjoy Nickajack ... that's a pretty lake. I'd like to run it sometime, maybe even head in to Chattanooga.

Will work ok, small motor is better then not boating at all. The good advise has already been given, just make sure the cavitation plate stays under water at speed.
I like your attitude and idea, something is better then nothing.

Will only achieve with current prop just fast displacement speeds, much better than rowing. Can maximize wot rpm for that engine and current application playing with prop pitches. For that will need to install a induction tach to check max achieved rpm under wot and dial best prop pitch so engine works inside safe working parameters factory stated forr that HP model.

Thanks for all advise. I just want to get my hard work this year. And next year I will upgrade til a 30-35 hp outboard. Plus this will be my wifes first year on the water and she is scared a little bit. I know a bigger motor would really scare her and ruin the outdoor and boating life for her until she gets used to life on the water.

Max: 85 hp.

But can afford a used motor in the size range this spring and summer.

With a 10 HP as a pusher you're way

D
O
W
N

Select a proper prop pitch for your combo or you'll be lugging engine at wot.

I wouldn't go from a 10 just to a 35. If the boat is rated for 85, likely the weight of it will make very little difference between the 10 and the 35. You're not going to plane with either of those, just gonna' be a barge moving through the water. When you upgrade you'll want to go to a 70 or so.

Don't have to go fast if the Admiral doesn't want to ;)

Re: will this motor work

well the 10 hp would be for this year only. As I have been working on the boat for the last few months. I am looking to enjoy it this summer. If I don't use it this year its not worth having :( . Would I be better to trade my boat for a 14 ft jon boat with a 10 hp.
