Will this Prop fit?

Hello again, another question for the Masterminds here on the site. I have a friend who has a 150hp mercury out board. He has a Quicksilver Laser II 25 pitch 3 blade prop. Will this prop from an out board work on my alpha one stern drive? I have a 3.7 mercruiser engine mated to a 3.0 alpha one stern drive. I can get this prop from him for a good price, but I need to know if it will fit? Thanks in advance!

Ayuh,... With the right hub kit, it should....

is it possible that the hub that is in that Quicksilver Prop is the same as the one I need for my Stern drive? What I'm saying is, is there a chance it will just slide right on as is? Or is it a known fact that the hub for an outboard motor is different than the hub for an I/O?

^ VERY good point! I wasnt sure of that. So what would that do, not let me plane out? Or would it let the engine go above WOT range of 4200-4600? And what about getting a 4 blade prop, is that possible with my set up? Thanks for the responses!

Ayuh,... Considerin' you've got the Wrong ratio drive on it,...
It's hard to say, other than Try It...

Re: Will this Prop fit?

is there any known harm in this? I dont understand what the prop size relates to speed, i.e does a larger pitch mean higher top end or better take off, or does that not relate at all? And, are you saying that the hub should be the same on the 150 Mercury outboard as my alpha one stern drive?

Ayuh,... The Bigger the Pitch #, the faster it'll go,... IF ya have the Horsepower...
Otherwise, the motor Lugs itself to Death..
The smaller the pitch #, the slower it'll go, 'n it'll Over-rev sooner,...
If ya have the Horsepower...

Re: Will this Prop fit?

Thanks for the response Bond-o, so basically I need to just try different props out? I currently have a 14x19 aluminum one. I have a 14x19 stainless as well but it needs some repair. Is there a limit for my set up pitch wise? Like a number I dont want to exceed? Perhaps 21 pitch is the largest I should go? My FIRST priority is to not do harm to the engine or stern drive, so is 170hp engine strong enough to turn a 21 pitch without "luging" the engine to death?

Check out the original post I made to this. Fill out the information and we'll help you determine what change in prop will work best for your boat.

Re: Will this Prop fit?

OK, 1. Performance issue i want to correct.- well I want to get out of the hole pretty well because we ski/wake board with the boat.

2. Current prop manufacturer, model, aluminum or stainless as a minimum.- Not sure of the make, its 14x19, and aluminum.

3. Current prop diameter and pitch (required).- As stated above, 14x19

4. Wide open throttle RPM and speed with an average load (very helpful).- Now this is tricky, I dont really know just yet. Didn't really have the full typical load last season and cant exactly remember rpm or speed. I plan on
TYPICALLY having 4 people and maybe a Wake boarder plus (maybe 60lbs of extra stuff) some drinks/towels/misc

5. Engine/drive make, model, year, and HP.- 170hp Mercruiser 3.7 liter(1986 pretty sure), 3.0 liter alpha one stern drive(1986),

6. Boat make model, year, length and weight .- 1986 Rinker V190, 19', and I dont know the weight.

Hopefully this helps, and as always, thanks for any responses.

Re: Will this Prop fit?

I'm confused- is this a mish-mash of drivetrain parts? The drive is off a 3.0L engine but the engine in the boat is a 3.7? Bondo has a point- gear ratio is important for proper operation.
As for the 25 prop- it'll fit. But you'll never get out of the hole with even just you in the boat. Too much for the engine. The Laser is an excellent choice for an I/O but in the correct pitch. If you are running a 19 now and RPM is good (we'll assume since you don't know yet,) jumping to a 25 will eat 1200 rpm. And that's even if you can get her up on plane.
A 25 is a great prop for a lightweight bassboat with 2 people and gear. It will SUCK on a bowrider with 4 people and gear. In fact, if you are skiing and wakeboarding you may even want to go DOWN in pitch for best holeshot/pulling power.

My example is my boat, a 19' center console - I run a 150 hp Merc. I run a 19 Tempest when I'm by myself or with one other guy out fishing. It'll run 50 mph @ 5,600 rpm. However, when I pull tubes or take the family out for a day on the lake, I put on a 13 Mirage. Top speed drops to 35 mph and I'll overrev (6,000 +) if I don't watch the tach. But the power of the Mirage is awesome compared to the Tempest. I can pull down houses with the Mirage.

All that being said, you can run a 3, 4 or 5 blade prop provided it is the right pitch and diameter. That is the hard part- determining exactly what the "right" prop.

Re: Will this Prop fit?

ufm82, thanks for the break down, thats very helpful info. So it sounds like I want a smaller diameter then most likely. Well I will be taking it out to test it this weekend, I guess after I see what i get with the current 14x19 I will report back and we can go from there. But regardless, i am not fishing on this boat at all, it is strictly for water sports. Thanks again!
