That's what I use for d.s. and propshaft seals. You need to rig a puller for the shift shaft o-ring bushing.. If you search here you'll find out how to do it.

Good luck!

Would that by chance be the tool that this "FR" guy makes that everyone is telling me about?

He makes the tool to remove the shift rod seal bushing. The puller like you posted is for the prop and drive shaft seal removal.

yup, that seal puller will work just fine. While you can buy/make a special tool to remove the shift shaft bushing, I just use a spade bit and socket extender. You can get a reseal kit right here at ioats for about $25. Here are some great links that can walk you through the whole job.

Re: Will this tool work?

Thanks KFA. I just ordered the one tool from Frank and I'll pick up the other seal puller as well as I'm sure I'll find other uses for it down the road. Also, just curious if there is anything in the Permatex line (or other brand) that is equivalent to the 3M 847 that folks have mentioned? It sure would be nice to be able to pick something up locally instead of ordering it online. Plus it's a little on the steep side compared to all the other gasket sealants out there. Not a deal or wallet breaker for sure but just curious all the same. Thanks

I've got one of those tools in my tool box. Just be careful not to gouge the housing around the seal when using it.

Yeah, the 3M 847 can be tricky to track down. You can find it online, but it's kind of pricey once you add in the shipping for one little tube. However, I believe Maynards carries it in stock. Some folks use other alternatives such as Permatex Aviation gasket sealer, which has sort of a molasses consistency and/or products like Permatex Black.

as well you're gonna have a little different setup in your gearbox. The parts diagrams at marineengine.com...look at #42 and note that it's a plate that holds the d/s seal. The plate comes out and you can use a punch or drift to drive the seal out. BE CAREFUL and fully support that plate when removing the seal as they are expensive when you can find them.

Re: Will this tool work?

I've been using permatex ultra black for a few years since my tube of 847 ran dry. No issues.

Re: Will this tool work?

Good to know. Was wondering why something like that wouldn't work. Thanks for your input.
