pump is a pump is a pump as long as the reservoir holds enough fluid. boat hydraulics use buna rubber which has a pressure limit. they also like to use red dextron3 fluid which also has a limit before it impregnates the rubber. both limits are below the operating pressure of virtually every pump made.
however, every trim system needs more fluid when raised than when lowered. the reservoir is where the fluid level goes up and down during operation. If the reservoir is too small then your system can burst if over-filled or just simply run out fluid before raising far enough. No harm in reservoir being too large.
