I am gettin no spark on my 74' Chrysler 35hp. Just to rule out weak magnets I was thinking of using 2 holes that are already behind the 2 magnets on the fly wheel. In the 2 1/4" holes I was thinking of placing 10 small n-48 earth magnets and sealing the hole. This should make the mags on the flywheel more powerful right, as long as the polarity is right?

If your not getting spark when hooked up to a battery then the flywheel would be irrelevant- because the spark would be provided by the battery. The magnet thing would affect the ability for your motor to recharge the battery- I would not recommend adding anything to the flywheel as it spins very fast and it is balanced so you don't want to throw off the balance- I would check the points first

Do you have a battery or magneto ignition? Is the flywheel already off? If so, will a screwdriver atract to the magnets? You could have points that aren't opening up too.

Most older repair manuals warn that 'weak' magnets will affect spark. The next 'weak' magnet I find causing spark loss will be the first.

DHP

It is a magneto ignition. The magnet will hold a screwdriver but not any more weight. The points appear to be fine and are adjusted. I just ordered a new set of points and condensers that will be here on Monday and I will see if that fixes the problem. Should my magnets be stronger? Thanks

When you tested the spark did you ground the plug tips and test with wire connected? I agree your magnets are not the issue here. I dont think that motor has a lanyard switch however if you are failing the spark test check your wiring and make sure your ignition system isnt shorting to ground somewhere. Also check the circuit breaker. It should be located on the port side just behind the starter solinoid.

The wire was connected and the tip grounded. I touched a bare screwdriver while it was in the end of the spark plug wire. The circuit breaker is fine, I checked that already. I do not see anywhere it could be grounding out. I looked for melted wires and even tried turning it over in the dark to see if there was a spark and nothing. The strange part about all this is that the day I bought it and took it home I was able to get spark and it started right up. Then is just disappeared and only sparked once in a while but only briefly. There are 2 spereate coils so I don't think both could've gone bad at the same time.

I put new points and condensers on it and I still have no spark. It must be the coils or the flywheel magnets...right?
