Will this work to test my OB in?

I have a 1967 80 hp Evinrude OB that I just bought on a boat. i was told it ran and i want to test it. The water intake is under the cav plate so muffs wont work. The cav plate is 23" long so the only thing i could find was a tub we use to store x-mas things. If filled, there will be about 8 inches of water above the cav plate.

Will this work?

Thanks!

As long as the water is slightly higher than the water intake and the prop blades don't damage the sides. I think it will be just fine.

Recommend that you keep water running. Helps keep the mtr cooler in a smaller barrel. Also the higher the water in barrel it's better for the water pump.

Water must be at least 1" above the split between gearcase and extension on leg, but looks like it will work.
Would have put a piece of ply-board or similar on top to prevent the exhaust to blow out the water.

It will work in neutral at idle speeds. As soon as you put it in gear, the tub will empty. As said, that bulge above the cavitation plate must be well submerged or you will be back here, asking why your motor doesn't pump water.

Um, now where are you going to put the Christmas lights?

Keep the hose running in the trash can while you're running it, the motor exhaust will make water get hot quick! Don't put it in gear with that small trash can. Good Luck!

If your planning on putting it in gear nothing is gonna work shy of a swimming pool:)

The bucket will be fine for idle speed and slight revving (under 1500 to avoid runaway) keep the hose running in the bucket. Clean up wont be that bad for short 10 minute runs.

To set the timing or other settings that require WOT operation find a friend and a quiet area on the water.
