Winch post setup

The original configuration my winch post was as shown:

It didn't seem like the winch pulled straight with the bow eye and the boat would not snug up against the bow stop. Also, the edge of the transom was a couple of inches short of the roller bunk.

I changed it as follows:

I initially had the bow stop higher but it snagged the bow eye at launch. I believe it will clear this way. This also allows the transom to sit over the end of the roller bunk. I added a safety chain, too. I probably need to eliminate some of the slack.

It seems to work to me but I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks

I have a similar problem... I think I'm going to move my whole winch post back since the boat sits too far forward by about 6"

Pretty sure the bow stop should be immediately above the bow eye and the winch cable should come from below the bow stop so the boat is being pulled down into it. I'd be afraid that your current set up will allow the boat to bounce up and forward. In your first set up the bow stop is too high that's why it gave problems when launching.

I agree with sublauxation.

Your safety chain should firmly attach the bow eye to the trailer frame, not the winch stand. No slack. You probably need to move the spare back a bit. Use a piece of chain and a turnbuckle. The current setup would launch your boat into the back of your vehicle in even a mild collision

Thanks, guys. I see that now. I was more focused on the boat not sliding off the back of the trailer because of the roller bunks. I'm not sure how I will rearrange the pieces but your input is very valuable. Thanks.

Thanks, EZ. That is very helpful. I think I can get back close to that. I notice that your boat doesn't fit firmly against the bow stop. I had the same issue and that's what motivated me to start making changes. You think that is an issue?

Oh must have been weird that day. It's usually firmly against. If it isn't, it bounces on the trailer which is really annoying when towing.

Well, here's what I changed it to. I still don't like it but it's probably all I'll be able to do with this post. The winch still pulls down to get the boat against the bow stop. When the boat nears the post, it pulls down as much as forward and seems to put pressure on the bow roller. It is solid and would restrain the boat in case of an incident.
