I have a 24' SeaRay on a tandom trailer with only a hand winch. I had the winch tower off for painting. I want to adjust the winch into the proper position. Should the cable be pulling straight or slightly lifting up on the front of the boat?
Also should the eye on the boat come to rest or touch the stop V on the winch tower?

The winch should pull as straight as possible to the bow eye. The bow stop should be placed where it doesn't interfere with the winch-strap or bow eye, and should touch the bow when the boat is in its full-forward position on the trailer.

And.. the winch strap should run UNDER the Bow stop so the Bow Eye ends up UNDER the Bow Stop in the Full Forward position on the trailer. :D

It's dependent on the design of the winch post. Some winch posts have a welded spot for the bow stop, which may be over, under, or on both sides of the winch itself. I see no advantage to the bow stop being above or below the winch structurally. My bow stop is under the bow eye, and is immovable without a welding torch.

With the Bow Eye above the Bow stop it will be just fine from now until Doomsday.
On Doomsday you will need to really slam on the brakes HARD or will rear end someone.
The boat may end up coming over the top of the Bow Stop and be in your back seat!

If the Bow Eye is UNDER the Bow Stop you have a fighting chance that the boat might just stay on the trailer.

If you have the option, position the Eye under the Stop. But don't sit up nights worrying about it.
Sharks , Lightning, and Meteors are a bigger threat.
