Well we pulled the toon yesterday and my winch strap snapped. Rotted from the Florida sun along with a couple other lines. Will be replacing it:eek:
What is the general consensus on straps vs cables? I am thinking of using a cable this time but all my boats have had strapping on the winches. The boat is 18' with a 40 hp on the stern What size cable should I use and if I go with a strap again I will be making a cover to go over the winch when stored. Either Sunbrella of a marine vinyl undecided on that also. I just want to keep the UV off the strap if I go that route.

Wasn't that a new rig, "Minup"? Can't believe the strap broke already !!! I've never had cables before on pontoon boats.

You'll get as many opions as there are people. I like the strap best I think. Though I usually use whatever came on the winch for the most part. I've had both break, I've had cables that get stuck down under when pulled tight on a loose wrap. I think both need attention and inspection often. But all in all I prefer the old strap.

Re: Winch

Rooster, It was a new boat to me. I think the trailer is an 06 model. Nothing lasts log in this sun. Its worse than bleach :)

I was wondering about a cable getting stuck. If memory serves me I had a winch with a cable and it did get stuck from time to time. Memory doesn't always serve me all that well.

Re: Winch

A nylon type strap would be more user friendly and what most winches (for boats) come with. Unless you get some nice high grade stainless wire rope (cable) that is very flexible and easy to use, the normal wire rope (carbon steel) will rust constantly unless you keep it lubed up. Smaller 1/4 or 5/16 fine stainless wire rope is nice....but pricey, plus ya gotta swedge your own end with a snap hook and all that......

Well I guess a new strap it will be. Now I found some at Wally world that have a cap of 2000 lbs. Is that enough for an 18 footer? I would think so but I could look further.

Re: Winch

When I had to replace the strap on my 16 foot boat trailer I had two to pick from. (2 inch strap) A 2500 for about $9.95 and a 5000 lb. for five dollers more. Thats a no brainer as far as I'm concerned. For a couple bucks I got the 5000. This was for a 6-7 hundred pound boat. I don't know what came on your trailer but I think it was more than a 2000.

Re: Winch

Revisiting this I bought a heavy duty strap at West Marine and it was just to big to fit on my winch. Sooo. Back to the drawing board. You guys all say you have the 5000 k straps where do you find them and will they also be too much bulk for my winch?
I'd replace the winch if I could figure out what size to get
