Re: Wind

Am I in the Gulf of Mexico, or a small inland lake?

Re: Wind

I fish in a river anchored so a 10mph steady wind is enough to make it very aggravating. A 15mph steady wind is a deal breaker. About the same 10mph wind is the point that starts to affect getting it back on the trailer easily. I would still go out for a cruise and try to find a sheltered spot or somewhere where the wind was in my favor to fish at 10-15 mph, but would much rather have a calm day or just a slight breeze. The wind forecast is one of the first things I look at before planning an outing.

Re: Wind

My 75hp Merc will push my 'toon 24.6mph against the rivers current. A head wind much under 20mph and we will go out. It is about 3 miles up-river to our favorite fishing, swimming, and playing cove. Worse case scenario I'm going downstream with the wind at my back on the way home. Marina is sheltered so docking isn't a problem.

Re: Wind

You'll start seeing white caps with wind starting at 14-17mph. If the women will be riding along, they'll almost always mention being "chilly" about the same time you see those. Other than that, so much depends on what you're doing? Fishing in a sheltered cove, pulling a tube on a busy lake with 1-3 ft waves, etc.

Bottom line, other than maybe thunderstorms, generally if you want to go you can find something to do in about any weather.

Loading a boat at a ramp exposed to a healthy cross wind? That might be a challenge loading by yourself, for those not willing to get wet, or maybe those without a lot of experience, but certainly "doable". Just don't get in a hurry....

Re: Wind

I don't worry so much about the wind as I do about the white caps..If you have white caps stay home.

Re: Wind

I am spoiled living on the lake! If the wind is above 10mph I will wait for another day or take out my center console. Don't see fighting the wind when I can go out on a nicer day.

Live on a lake too. At 600 acres or so it's not huge, but being located near a Metro area, and with a state park containing a public boat launch, it can be very busy (holidays are nuts). That's why normal wind/white caps are taken in a stride? I'm used to it! Handling the 'toon in wind (within reason) is not that big a deal with some experience. The more you have the easier it gets. Starting out, suggest you walk before running.... avoid crazy conditions the first few times out.

Re: Wind

We have our summer home on the head waters of the Chesapecke Bay. Five rivers within a couple of miles form the bay. Within a 100 yard the channel is forty feet deep. So when we see white caps that means go another time or you may get run over by a large sail boat.
